13 The German secret service.

X: On His Majesty’s Secret Service

I did not know much about Universal Exports, except that it was a shell company of His Majesty’s Secret Service. I knew about its existence only through my collaboration with Sherlock Holmes, whose brother Mycroft was once its long-time director. In his honour, all future directors encrypted their civil service names with the first letter of his first name, “M”.

Naturally, I shall not reveal here the name of the agent who knocked over Leonard’s lorry. Although I suspect it was merely a code name, I do not want to risk exposing government secrets. So I shall call him James. Within the organisation of which he was a part he had attained to the rank of captain.

“How did you find me? Who sent you?” I groaned.

My body had suffered more than its fair share of trials and tribulations over the past few hours. It was no easy task to stand up.

With James’s help, however, I succeeded in getting to my feet. Together we pulled the unconscious Leonard out of the lorry. His small body was surprisingly heavy. He was solid as a rock, all muscle.

“I am investigating a security breach at Porton Down and you and your friend have been at the focus since Dr Fildes filed a report about your visit,” the agent explained. “This afternoon I got a call from my commanding officer, who said that Mr Holmes had informed him of his suspicions regarding a certain young lady and his intention to verify them. I was sent to monitor the situation.”

“Holmes was right,” I confirmed, and told him everything that had happened that night. “The lady is a German spy and has stolen anthrax!”

“Where is the anthrax now? Did you find it?”

“She moved it before we broke into her house.”

James cursed and lit a cigarette, seemingly untroubled by the fact that the tank of the lorry against which he was leaning was leaking petrol onto the road.

“We have been watching the villa since late afternoon and nobody left or came. They must have moved it before, right after your afternoon visit. I would have helped you before, but we had orders not to interfere. We needed the lady to incriminate herself. Mr Holmes believed that he could scare her and that she would run into our arms with the anthrax in her hands.”

“Alas, we ran into her arms.”

James nodded.

“As soon as I saw you being led away in handcuffs by that elf it was clear that something was wrong. My colleagues remained on patrol and I set off in pursuit of the lorry.”

“We must go back to Holmes! They are holding him hostage. If I do not return the money, they will kill him!”

I knew full well that Audrey would kill us anyways, but we were also responsible for the Greens.

“And I have a responsibility to Britain,” said James. “We will help your friend, but you must do it my way!”

He then revealed a plan that was so risky and audacious that I gasped.
